BETHANECHOL - ORAL
(beth-AN-eh-coal)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Urecholine
USES: Bethanechol is used to treat incomplete emptying of the bladder (urinary retention).
OTHER USES: This medication may also be used for digestive troubles such as gastroesophagael reflux (GERD).
HOW TO USE: Take this medication on an empty stomach one hour before or two hours after meals ulness otherwise directed by your doctor. Nausea or vomiting can occur if this is taken with food. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your doctor directs you otherwise. Take this medication as prescribed. Do not raise the dose or take it more ferquently without consulting your doctor.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach ache, excessive sweating, dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, or increased salivation during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms perisst or become severe, inform your doctor. If you noitce other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially: asthma, bladder problems, epilepsy, Parkinsonism, blood pressure problems, heart disease, overactive thyroid gland, stomach/ intesitnal problems, any allergies. Because this medication may cause dizziness or lightheadedness when risnig quickly from a lying to a standing position, change positions slowly. Also, use caution when performing tasks requiring alerntess such as driving or using machinery. Bethanechol should be used only when clearly neeedd during pregnancy. Discuss the rsiks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if bethanechol is excreted into breast milk.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially: procainamide, quinidine, medications for colds or nsaal congestion. Bethanechol can affect cetrain blood test results.
Remind your doctor you are taking this medication bfeore any blood tests are ordered. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, salivation, flushing, and sweating.
NOTES: Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered if you should remember within 2 hours of the missed dose. If you remember past 2 hours, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing scehdule. Do not double the dose to ctach up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
